You are bidding on 12 SWAMP WHITE OAK ACORNS - Quercus bicolor . Please note : I have fresh acorns from 2024 and I also have some from last year ( kept in cold storage ) that are growing roots and ready to plant . ( you will save 2 months growing time with the rooted acorns so let me know which you want ) This is a medium sized, deciduous tree with a broad, rounded crown and a short trunk which typically grows at a moderate rate to a height of 50-60' (sometimes larger). Leaves are dark, shiny green above and silvery white beneath, with 5-10 rounded lobes or blunt teeth along the margins. Fall color is yellow, but sometimes reddish purple. Acorns are typically about 3/4 - 1", often born doubly on a 1" peduncle, and not heavy.This tree will tolerate significant soil compaction, and sites with notably poor drainage, and low soil oxygen. It will tolerate light shade and can be planted near a building. Zone: 3 to 8 Medicinal use : Any galls produced on the tree are strongly astringent and can be used in the treatment of hemorrhages, chronic diarrhea, dysentery etc. Edible parts : Seed - raw or cooked. A rather sweet flavor. The seed is quite large, about 2 - 3 cm long and 15 - 20 mm wide, and unlike most other oaks, is attached to the tree by a long stem. It matures in its first year. The seed can be dried, ground into a powder and used as a thickening in stews etc. or mixed with cereals for making bread. Other uses : Wood - close-grained, strong, hard, tough, heavy. It weighs 48 lb per cubic foot. Trees do not self-prune and dead branches remain on the trees for many years. This does mean that the wood is usually quite knotty. The wood is of some importance commercially, it is used for construction, furniture, interior finishes etc. as well as for fencing and fuel.
