Description: This is an original document as follows: "For value received I Promise to Pay to Mr. Andrew Van Tuyl or order One Hundred Pounds Current and Lawful Money of the State of New York On demand with interest from the date here of till paid as witness my hand. New York 24 June 1786Witness Azarias Williams" We don't know who borrowed the money from Andrew. It was customary to extract the signature of the debtor when the debt was paid which voided the document. Andrew Van Tuyl was a dry goods merchant in New York. We have found many references to both of these men including a picture of the grave of Azarias and a story about his wedding - On December 30, 1788, Sarah Furman Warner and Azarias Williams were married at Trinity Church, NYC; five children were born of this marriage. Azarias, tired of city life, purchased a farm and moved his growing family to Concord, Vermont, in 1796. There he opened a store and "became one of the founding fathers and first merchants of Concord. Azarias became a judge and, in 1805, the first postmaster of Concord. While continuing to buy up land sold for taxes, Azarias deeded 1,500 acres to the University of Vermont in Concord and to various other towns. Azarias and Sarah became the first Americans to donate land grants to universities in the country. In 1816, a house of worship was erected for the Concord Corner Church, across from the Azarias Williams place, at a cost of $3,000.00, paid for by Sarah Furman Williams and built to her specifications to match the church she went to in NYC. Sarah and Azarias had erected a mansion on the farm and lived in a style far above any other family in the town until their home and all valuable furnishings were destroyed in a fire in 1825. No longer enamored with the country lifestyle, Sarah returned to NYC after inheriting her stepfathers home; she never returned to Concord and died in 1848 at the age of 83. In her memory, a monument of chaste granite stands in the family vault in St. Pauls Church yard, at Trinity Church; her husband and other family members are buried there with her.And in a book entitled, "The Old Merchants of New York City" by Walter Barrett is the following in reference to Andrew Van Tuyl: All my life," said the astonished Sebring, with tears in his eyes. " Oh, darn it ; that has nothing to do with it. You have served your country in war you have been a leading merchant, and now you are poor. True, you have been a Federalist, but you have been a friend to your country. Mr. Sebring became again a happy man. He was over eighty, but Sam Swartwout had saved the old war veteran from going to the poor house. He enabled him to earn a support, for he was good at figures, and was of great service in the Auditor's department. By his side at a desk, was the aged Andrew Van Tuyl, also an old citizen of great worth. These two would talk over old times with great glee. Mr. Sebring, after he got into the Custom house, took board at five dollars a week. He was restored again to his old position as an elder in the Dutch Church, and he died while an elder, and while holding the place in the Custom House. He was ninety years old when he died. In the days of his prosperity, he stood very high as a merchant, and he did a very extensive shipping business. It seems hard that old merchants are not made comfortable in this way. They could be of service in the Custom House, and no one would be- grudge them their place. Even if the present system of removing partisans was to be kept up, it need not interfere with the system of keeping from 400 to 500 old merchants in employ, without reference to their politics." We also can provide a link for Andrew's genealogical information to they buyer. Our specialty is reuniting "Orphaned Heirlooms" back to families.
