1820 Letter from Downingtown, PA

Description: Letter written from Downingtown, PA by Jacob Sharpless to Blakey Sharpless, November 14, 1820. Jacob Sharpless (b. 3 Aug 1791; d. 18 Feb 1863, Downingtown, PA). Blakey Sharpless (b. 21 June 1787, Philadelphia, PA; d. 24 Sept 1853, Haddonfield, NJ). Mira Sharpless (b. 26 Sept 1798, Philadelphia, PA; d. November 1859, probably in Philadelphia, PA). Joseph Sharpless (b. 6 Dec 1808, Catawissa, PA; d. 12 March 1900, Bloomsburg, PA). Sophia Clemson (b. 27 Aug 1792, Salisbury Twp., PA; d. 16 Nov 1861, Downingtown, PA). Joshua B. Sharpless (b. 1787, Salisbury, PA). He was married to Sophia Clemson. Mary Offley Sharpless (b. 14 April 1793; d. 24 May 1865, Haddonfield, NJ). William Ellis Davis. Little is known about him. There is also some confusion about the spelling of this name, and it appears in the records as David, Davies, and Davis. When they emigrated to Pennsylvania most Welsh people adopted the English style of last names, keeping the first name of their father as their new and permanent last name. Therefore, there are random assortments of Welsh people with the same last name, who may or may not be related to each other. Davies is usually assumed to be Welsh while Davis is English. But the people who wrote most of the records in colonial Pennsylvania were English, rather than Welsh, and consistent spelling was not considered a virtue, let alone a necessity, so these guidelines are not always reliable. Over time many families morphed, either consciously or unthinkingly, to English spelling. Eliza Miller (b. 10 Sept 1799, Philadelphia, PA; d. 21 Dec 1871, West Whiteland, PA). Benjamin Sharpless (b. 16 Jan 1777, Middletown Twp, PA; d. Sept 1845, Mercer Co., PA). A2
