The French department of Côtes-d'Armor, formerly called Côtes-du-Nord until 1990, is located in Brittany. The Côtes-du-Nord department was created during the French Revolution on Mars 4, 1790, in application of the law of December 22, 1789. It includes part of the antique province of Brittany made up of the eastern bishoprics of Cornouaille and Trégor, almost the entire bishopric of Saint-Brieuc (the extreme south being attached to Morbihan), the northern west of the bishopric of Saint-Malo, a small part to the west of the bishopric of Dol and two small parts to the northeast of the bishopric of Vannes. In civil terms, it extends over the counties of Penthièvre and Trégor, most of Poudouvre and the northern parts of Poher and Porhoët. It thus takes over a significant part of the ancient kingdom of Domnonée (whose name disappears in the 11th century). The formation of the department was much discussed. The western part wanted a department centered on Morlaix bringing together the north-west of Brittany. The city of Saint-Malo wanted a department to be created around it to the detriment of Saint-Brieuc and Rennes but this project had no support from representatives of the other cities. Finally, the department of Côtes-du-Nord went as far as the Rance, Saint-Malo only obtaining a few communes facing it on the left bank of the Rance (including Dinard). Saint-Brieuc obtained to be the capital, to the detriment of Quintin then almost as populated.
