Description: 1876 Twenty Cent piece, authenticated / graded / encapsulated by PCGS as Select Uncirculated, MS-61; but there's more than just that to this specimen. This premium coin was saved from circulation from a low mintage run of just 14,750, completed as policy shifted to abandoning this denomination and then melting down freshly-minted coins in storage. Only 400 or so uncirculated 1876s are estimated to have survived to now. 1876 Philadelphia twenty cent pieces are rare enough as it is, but this one remains untouched by circulation and wear, and now is toned starting at the rims and fields that appears along with the lustre. The reverse is prooflike to moderately prooflike; that's undeclared in the "slab" but gives the coin a premium status. As we have seen this before, apparently the reverse die for this 1876 mintage run was especially polished or "basined." This would be an exceptional way to type collect the lesser-known 20 cent denomination or to collect the unusual 20-cent piece series by date. Additionally, the PCGS old-style holder of the 1990s means the grading standards were slightly stricter then; this may be upgradable to MS-62 as we looked with a loupe and it seems a good candidate with Select Unc-level field marks but not so much as to clearly disqualify the next higher grade. Or, the holder itself is an antique! Enjoy considering this special acquisition.
