Description: 1883 AU Liberty Head V Nickel "No Cents" with die crack errors. The Story Charles Barber's famed Liberty Head nickel was first issued in 1883, with a large Roman numeral V (five) on the reverse but not the word "cents." Soon, con artists discovered that when gold plated, the coins could easily be passed off to unsuspecting merchants as $5 gold pieces. The word cents was soon added to the reverse, and these one-year-only 1883 "No Cents" nickels became instant collector items.
