Description: A very rare copy of the American political, satirical magazine, called 'The Judge'. Early on, it aligned itself with The Republican Party. 'The Judge' was published in New York between 1881 and 1947, so this October 1885 issue is a very early one. Contains three full page colour illustrations by well known illustrators of the day: The first one, by Frank Beard (FB) shows William Sherman trying to 'tame' the bull of democracy. The centrefold, by Grant E.Hamilton is quite remarkable, showing the possibility of a much better outcome for black people in America, giving them agency via democracy, rather than their subjection via the 'might' of the whip of slavery. Abraham Lincoln is benignly seated in the centre! The end illustration, by D.Mac, shows the famous elephant, Jumbo, who had been killed in a railway accident in Canada the month before. There is also a lot of other often humorous text , poems, stories, commentary etc. giving a real flavour of the period , as well as many interesting line adverts. Measures: approx 13.5" x 10" and 16 pages altogether. Please note that I have been an extensive collector of old and unusual books, prints and other ephemera for many years. However, it is now time to downsize, so all the items I sell come from my own, private collection. I am a private seller on Ebay, just hoping to pass on my items to other collectors who will appreciate them. Condition: please see above and look carefully at the photos.
