Description: Description: Very rare German translation of The Megillat Esther with rare lithographs/illustrations. Excellent translation and commentary on the Book of Esther in German. Very nice condition, nice title page, no writing in interior, very clean, 48 pp. Maroon to red covers and tight binding. This has an interesting font for the Hebrew as in the Torah/Calligraphy style. The German translation is the regular Fractur font. מגלת אסתר עם ברכותיה לפניה ולאחריה וגם הוספנו עליה תפלת ערבית לפורים This is extremely rare, there are merely only two copies worldwide and both sitting unavailable in libraries, one in The Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati and one in The National Library Of Israel. There are 4 other editions, 3 of them in The National Library Of Israel and the other in The Leo Baeck Institute, but they are different editions and not this exact one. Additionally, this copy is probably in nicer condition then any other as the title page is impeccable with just a tiny fold at edge and the pages are spotless. There are no ugly Library ink stamps on conspicuous areas or on the title page. The ones in the libraries probably don't have the rare covers as they typically fel off or were damaged and the illustrations and pages are probably marked up and stained, knowing what's doing in some of these libraries. This is a museum item. For pedigree's sake it has one solitary ink stamp on the inside blank cover from the Archival Depot, Offenbach A. M. It also has a lovely book store label from that time. I can make out 'C. Boas Na.. (Nachf.) Buchhandlung 16 Berlin C. Neue Friedrichstrasse 69 Ecke Klosterstrasse'. Megilath Esther Das Buch Esther mit worttreuer Ueber-setzung und Erklarungen. Von Dr. Salomon Herxheimer, herzogl. Landesrabbiner zu Anhalt-Bernburg. Mit funf Abbildungen. Sechszehnte Auflage. Eigentum undVerlag von Jacob S. Brandeis. Prague 1910. Megilath Esther The book of Esther with faithful translationstatement and declarations. By Dr. Salomon Herxheimer, ducal. State Rabbi of Anhalt-Bernburg. With five illustrations. Sixteenth edition. property andPublished by Jacob S. Brandeis. Prague 1910. About the Translator:He was a German rabbi, born in 1801, at Dotzheim, near Wiesbaden, he died in 1884, at Berenberg. At the age of thirteen he began his theological studies at Mayence, in the yeshivah of Rabbi Herz Scheyer, applying himself assiduously at the same time to secular studies under Michael Creizenach. Four years later he left Mayence to accept a position as private tutor at Herborn, Nassau, where he remained until 1824. In that year he entered the University of Marburg, where he studied pedagogy, history, and Oriental languages. After three years at Marburg, he went to Göttingen; after passing (1827) the necessary examination, he was appointed religious instructor at Eschwege, and became district rabbi Nov. 6, 1830. While at Eschwege he wrote "Yesode ha-Torah," which reached its twenty-ninth edition in 1883. While untiring in his efforts for the moral elevation of the young, Herxheimer's chief aim was the development of agricultural pursuits among his coreligionists. He also devoted much time and effort to the amelioration of the condition of Palestinian and Turkish Jews. While teaching in Eschwege, he wrote Yesodei ha-Torah (1831), a popular work on religious and moral instruction, which was translated into English and reached 36 editions by 1916. In addition to the Yesode ha-Torah he wrote: Der Pentateuch im Hebraischen Texte mit Worttreuer Uebersetzung und mit Fortlaufender Erklarung 1841; Die Propheten und Hagiographen im Text mit Uebersetzung und Fortlaufendem Commentar 1841-48.
