Washington Silver Quarter - Background & Design: In preparation for the 1932 bicentennial celebration of George Washington's birth, the bicentennial committee, established by Congress, initially aimed to introduce a Washington half dollar. However, Congress made the decision to permanently replace the Standing Liberty quarter instead, requiring the inclusion of Washington's depiction on the obverse of the new coin. Sculptor Laura Gardin Fraser, commissioned to design a commemorative medal, was tasked with adapting her artwork for the quarter. Despite receiving support from the Commission of Fine Arts and its chairman, Charles W. Moore, the design by Flanagan was ultimately chosen by Treasury Secretary Andrew W. Mellon, a decision later affirmed by Mellon's successor, Ogden L. Mills. The newly minted silver quarters entered circulation on August 1, 1932, and remained in production until the Mint transitioned to copper-nickel clad coinage in 1965. To commemorate the United States Bicentennial, a special reverse design was utilized in 1975 and 1976, with all quarters bearing the double date 1776–1976; no quarters were minted with the year 1975 alone. Since 1999, the original eagle reverse design has been replaced, with the quarter featuring various designs that celebrate the 50 states, other jurisdictions of the nation, and significant historical and natural sites as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters series, which concluded in 2021. The bust of Washington underwent modifications, with a smaller version introduced in 1999, followed by the restoration of the original design—albeit in a reduced size—in 2010 to enhance finer details. In 2021, Flanagan's original design resumed its place on the obverse, accompanied by a reverse design depicting Washington's crossing of the Delaware River in 1776. Furthermore, a new series commemorating influential women will begin in 2022. Washington Silver Quarter - Grading Scale & Guidelines: As per condition notes and guidelines, a Washington Silver Quarter in "Brilliant Uncirculated" condition showcases minimal wear or abrasions, typically limited to the highest points on the coin. The surface is well-preserved, with the possibility of minor luster present. Noteworthy blemishes such as significant nicks and bag marks should be minimized. Obverse: On the obverse, there is an absence of wear, even on the design's elevated areas. The mint luster remains intact, while some distracting marks may be noticeable in the field or on Washington's face. Reverse: Turning to the reverse, no wear is observed on the eagle's prominent points, including the breast and upper wing tips. However, a notable number of distracting marks may be present on the eagle's surface. By adhering to these grading guidelines, collectors can assess the minute signs of wear, evaluate the preservation of mint luster, and consider any notable marks on Washington Silver Quarters in "Brilliant Uncirculated" condition.
