Beginning his professional baseball career in 1950 with the Kansas City Monarchs in the Negro leagues, Banks briefly served in the U.S. military before returning to play for the Monarchs. His National League journey commenced in September 1953, and the following year, he was the National League Rookie of the Year runner-up. Banks made 14 appearances as a National League All-Star. He emerged as the focal point for the Cubs in the late 1950s, securing the National League Most Valuable Player title in 1958 and 1959, and becoming the Cubs' first Gold Glove winner in 1960. In 2013, Banks was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his contribution to sports.
