I always wanted to keep up with the big kids, and this smaller and lighter vehicle fit the bill! Reckless to a fault, there I was out to conquer the world (or at least the driveway) on my blue trike! This 1978 retro Hedstrom trike has handlebars which are 21" high. Measuring 15" from the top of the molded plastic seat to the ground and 23" from the front tire to the rear tire, this slightly worn trike still sports great style. Keeping up with the big kids can be a challenge for those little ones! Yet, with supervision, a 2-4-year-old could have a great time in the backyard or on the driveway. This Grandpa restoration project will enable you to give a toddler some great adventures. The Hedstrom Company, which was founded in 1915 in Gardner, MA, specialized in sleek full-sized bicycles. Beginning in 1937, the company featured the Minuteman Tricycle. The full-sized bicycles were not really a commercial success because of their high price tag. Technology filtered down to the child-sized versions which were less costly. The new styles revolutionized the children's industry, creating much more interest among customers. For the first time, children could actually own a streamlined ‘vehicle’ rather than just seeing them in shop windows and catalogues. A family might not be able to afford a new Chrysler Airflow, but they could afford to own a tricycle for their children featuring the new streamline styling! Toddlers have conquered many driveways with this trike and the trike shows it. While the black seat (photo #7) is in good shape, some rust is present on the single back step (photo #8). The handlebars are attached and flexible with red handle grips (photo #2), but the handlebars don't move the tires. The pedals are present but have some cracking. Look at the photos carefully. Some patina and scrapes can be seen throughout. Let your toddler ride with just a few maintenance adjustments or make the trike a restoration project. A fine display item as is, the trike is a piece of transportation history. Ready! Set! Go! Ride'em driveway!
