Oak was used until the mid-nineteenth century on British Navy vessels, while the official march of the Royal Navy is titled 'Heart of Oak.' It symbolises strength, longevity and wisdom, and can be found across the British Isles. In recognition of this heritage and symbolism, this silver proof One Pound coin representing England features, on the reverse, a mighty oak tree encircled by the Royal Diadem, designed by Leslie Durbin. Below the oak design, the denomination 'ONE POUND' is transcribed. Around the edge of this silver proof coin is the inscription 'DECUS ET TUTAMEN' which translates to 'an ornament and a safeguard.' This design is paired with Raphael Maklouf's portrait of Elizabeth II on the obverse, the third official effigy of The Queen. The first One Pound coins were issued in 1983, their reverse featured a design of the Royal Coat of Arms.
