Description: This Modern Library book, #97.1 in the series, Poems by Walt Whitman includes an introduction by Carl Sandburg. From the front panel of the 1st ML edition: “Walt Whitman is one of the rocks on which the Modern Church of Thought has been built. No other poet of the nineteenth century has exerted such a universal influence; he ranks indubitably as the greatest of American bards. "Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking," "I hear America Singing" and the noble Lincoln ode, "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomed," are a few of the poems that come to mind from his many beautiful creations. The spirit and form of his work have affected the ideals and ideas of the world and coupled his name with those of Homer and Shakespeare. One of the most distinguished of his many followers, Carl Sandburg, has contributed a characteristically virile introduction to this book, which now finds a fitting place in the Modern Library” 311 pgs. Plus a list of other Modern Library titles. The book has a Toledano 4 cover and a C or Bernhard endpapers. The highest number at the list at the end of the book is #150, The Art of Whistler by Pennell dating the list to 1928. There is a prior owner's name on the front endpaper dated September 1928.The cover is clean with no creasing, the gilt is bright, and the spine ends and corner wear is light. Fanning the pages, I noted no underling or marginalia, no offensive odor, and the binding is without issue. See photosOnly in print from 1921 to 1928.
