DONNA NORINE SCHUSTER BIOGRAPHY Donna Norine Schuster was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Jan. 6, 1883. Schuster studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and Boston Museum School under Edmund Tarbell and Frank W. Benson. In 1912 she accompanied the famous impressionist artist William Merritt Chase on a painting tour of Belgium. She moved to Southern California and again studied with Chase in Carmel. In 1914 she was commissioned to paint at the famous Pan Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, where she won awards for her work. In the 1920s she built a home in Los Angeles overlooking Griffith Park, where she spent her remaining years. She also purchased a home in Laguna and was a founder of the Laguna Art Museum. Schuster painted many scenes in the Griffith Park, Silver Lake, Hollywood, and Monterey areas of California, and harbors at San Pedro and San Francisco. She also traveled to and painted scenes in Wisconsin, Cape Cod, and Mexico. During the 1920s Schuster painted many harbor scenes, landscapes, figure studies and the famous Water Lilies Series, showing her admiration of Monet. Her early works show the influence of Monet and Chase, and in the 1930's and 1940s she experimented with Cubism, showing a flatter, more 2-dimensional and more abstract manner. Shuster produced numerous still life paintings during this period, including her Breakfast Table Series. JackpotGoldArt has two works from this Breakfast Table Series, China Doll and Breakfast Table. Schuster's style was affected by Abstract Expressionism in the 1950s, in her Griffith Park Series, of which we own 2 works; "Griffith Park Observatory" and "Grassy Landscape." Her last series of water colors and oils Yosemite Series was painted around 1952, and at least 35 works are said to survive. Professor Leonard R. DeGrassi (1977) commented "that the color (sometimes dull, sometimes vibrant) is broken up into bold {3-dimensional} streaks articulating particular forms ... a rock, part of a tree, a streak of water, a cloud. In the first few paintings, the colors are laid on noticeably separate from and independent of one another. As the series progresses the strokes of color are placed closer and closer, as though the artist were in the process of color orchestrating - as indeed she was. The result is a series that is luminous, free and bold." JackpotGoldArt has 2 paintings from this Yosemite Series for sale, "Yosemite Falls," and "River in Forest" likely also is from this time period, with bold 3-dimensional brush strokes. Donna Norine Schuster tragically died on December 27, 1953, by asphyxiation in her Griffith Park house when it was enveloped by a brush fire. Ms. Schuster's legacy is carried forward by the body of her artistic work.
