Description: Doyle Lane Studio Art Pottery Moon Pot Weed Vase Los Angeles California Vintage Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage Doyle Lane studio art pottery vase. Please excuse the glare in the photos. This piece is approximately 1 3/4 inches tall and 2 1/2 inches in diameter. Unpacked, it weighs 3.9 ounces. This moon pot or weed vase has a bright, reddish orange glaze with minor, dark, gunmetal gray effects. It has a tiny mouth opening; the glaze does not cover completely to the foot, exposing red clay at the lower portion of the vase. Throwing rings are visible on the exterior. Excess glaze was ground from beneath when this was made. This would be a fine addition to a collection of American studio ceramics. Identification This vintage piece has an incised marking beneath, "Lane." This piece is by Doyle Lane (1923-2002), a well-known artist who is listed in the Vasefinder Museum. Per Vasefinder, Lane was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He attended Los Angeles City College, receiving his degree in 1953. During the mid-1950s, he was a student of Vivika Heino and F. Carlton Ball at the University of Southern California. Lane worked as a glaze chemist for L.H. Butcher Chemical. He also taught at colleges in the Los Angeles area. Lane's works are in the collections of the Oakland Museum and elsewhere. More information about Doyle Lane is available on his Wikipedia page. Condition This pot looks fantastic overall, with very light wear and no chips or cracks. As noted above, excess glaze was ground off of the base when this was made. Glaze skips beneath and variations in glazing are as made. Please review the description and photos, and ask any necessary questions prior to bidding or buying. Terms of Sale 1.
