Grateful Dead 2-9-73 Maples Pavilion Captain Tapes' Choice vol. III 3CD set

Description: Grateful Dead at Maples Pavilion,February 9, 1973 Sound quality + performance = quality-factor. This recording from Maples Pavilion, Feb. 9, 1973 clearly rates a high score. The mix has minor problems initially, pro forma for the period. It is notably bottom-heavy for the tunes in the first set, but after a few tweaks the board manager gets it “exactly perfect.” Thankfully, this is one of the precious few boards from this era that doesn’t have that ‘Grateful Dead featuring Keith Godchaux’ mix.The piano is pleasantly in the background — as it should be. The first show of the year, it premiered seven new tunes. In the order played: “Row Jimmy,” “Loose Lucy,”“Here Comes Sunshine,” “They Love Each Other,” “Eyes of the World,” “China Doll,” and the proto-“US Blues,” “Wave That Flag.” The first show since the awesome Winterland New Year’s date nearly six weeks prior, one can sense the revitalized energy. Where was the band at this point in time, in the ‘wake of the flood’ following the primeval fire of their initial seven years? They were still taking two steps forward for every one step back. Coming off what many consider their best year in terms of balance between polish and consistency and fiery youthful abandon, the creative spirit was still in bloom. The strength of the new material as well as the expanding musical landscapes exemplified by “Eyes of the World” gives full credit to that claim. And then there’s the introduction of the proto Wall of Sound. The ambition was still very much present. The heart of the show is the “Eyes of the World,” preceded by a clinical reading of “Truckin’.” Not yet fully formed — Weir hasn’t worked out his chord voicings — the band had yet to discover the general format for the jam, the tail that wags the dog in “Eyes.” As such, it’s a real treat.Clocking in at more than 18 minutes, the boys embark on a loose journey through the jazzy chord structure and breezy tempo, hinting at the jam’s glorious developments to come, most perfectly realized in the June 10, RFK performance five months hence. Also notable here is the premiere performance of “Here Comes Sunshine”; one of the great jam tunes that for some reason never made it to permanent fixture in the repertoire. Jerry’s forgiven for flubbing a line or two in its first outing, and more than makes up for it leading the boys to this first exploration into fresh jam space. “Sunshine” clocks in at 9:32. Special mention also for “Looks Like Rain.” “Box of Rain,” the composition sung and co-written by our dearly departed Phil Lesh, makes its appearance late in the show. It had just entered the repertoire in the October prior, and bittersweet indeed that it was the very last song performed by the (real) band. Jerry plays an especially sweet solo in a heartfelt “Uncle John’s Band” to draw the night to a close before Bobby chimes in with a rock n’ roll closer and then a “Casey Jones” encore for the last word.
