PROVENANCE: Purchased directly from High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA in 2012.Brooklyn-based artist KAWS re-appropriates bits of popular culture and transforms them into eye-catching iconic sculptures and paintings. His cartoon characters, recognizable to the media-savvy public, undergo a sardonic set of alterations. Beginning his career in New York, he initiated his 'forced collaborations' by marking up fashion advertisements found in New York City phone booths, adding his own signature motifs to already existing photographic imagery and eventually expanding his practice to paintings and sculptures of varying sizes.KAWS is one of the most celebrated street-influenced artists working today. He is best known for his cartoon-style characters and images, which he has evolved from paintings to toys and clothing. His first store, Original Fake, recently opened in the Aoyama district of Tokyo, Japan. Through all of his projects, KAWS has successfully blurred the line between fine art and mass-produced merchandise. He uses his products to allow his imagery to infiltrate a larger audience than that of the fine art world. The artist is currently an active member in both the commercial and fine art communities. Recent solo exhibitions include OriginalFake at the Gallery in Tokyo (2003) and Tokyo First at Parco Gallery in Tokyo (2001). KAWS has been periodically showing both paintings and products at Colette in Paris since 1999.
