There are three possible origins associated with the surname of Lane. The first possible origin of the surname of Lane is that is is a topographical surname. This means that this surname was given to someone who lived on or near a man-made or natural structure. This structure would have been a notable landmark or area within a town or village, thus making it distinguishable to those who hailed from this area. In the case of the surname of Lane, this surname was used to describe someone who lived near a narrow passageway that included between houses. This particular derivation comes from the Old English pre-7th Century word of “lanu” which can be translated to mean “narrow.” The second possible origin of the surname of Lane is that it was an occupational surname. This means that the original bearer of the surname of Lane most likely worked in wool, meaning that he actually carried out this job. At first the coat of arms was a practical matter which served a function on the battlefield and in tournaments. With his helmet covering his face, and armor encasing the knight from head to foot, the only means of identification for his followers, was the insignia painted on his shield, and embroidered on his surcoat, the draped and flowing garment worn over the armor. Between the 11th and 15th centuries it became customary for surnames to be assumed in Europe, but they were not commonplace in England or Scotland before the Norman Conquest of 1066. Note: A Coat of Arms is sometimes also called a Family Shield, Code of Arms, Family Seal or Family Crest Elements of the coat of arms: Shield, lion, helmet Size: Approx. 8" x 10" perfect for framing. The crest image itself is very good size, almost 5" X 7". This is a very striking print and would look great framed. Condition: Not perfect, but very good with only very minor handling & surface wear - mostly which disappears behind glass when framed...this is a beautiful print with striking metallic ink There is a spot on upper right area I have a remaining inventory of approx. 300 different English and Scottish origin Coats of Arms - Names from J to W.
