Description: Both of these books were donated by patrons directly to the Friends of the Library. In general, the only “damage” I see is that on the Rutka book the owners made an embossed imprint on the opening end page and added a removable transparent book cover to the original cover. There is no damage or wear to the covers or inside pages to either of the books. They are both in almost unread condition. Eva Kor signed her book; both are first editions; Kor's book is paperback and Rutka's is hardback. Both of these books contain not only first-hand accounts, but also a number of actual photographs of people, events, and documents related to the events of the Holocaust. Together they give a compelling and not easily forgotten picture. The title of the first book (Surviving the Angel of Death: The True Story of a Mengele Twin in Auchwitz) clearly indicates the subject. Eva Kor and her twin sister were separated from the rest of their family and were used by Dr. Megele for experiments with no regard for their welfare. This easy to read memoir gives the reader insight into not only what the concentration camps were like but also to the indomitable spirit of Eva Kor. She not only survived the camp, but moved to the United States and became a recognized speaker both nationally and internationally, on topics related to the Holocaust, medical ethics, forgiveness, and peace. There is a personalized autograph from Eva on the title page. The second book (Rutka’s Notebook: A voice from the Holocaust) is a diary which was only discovered in 2006. It was written by a 14 year old girl named Rutka Laskier who became known as”The Polis Anne Frank”. Written over a period of four months early in 1943, the diary provides a striking new perspective on the daily life of Jews trapped in the nightmare of the Holocaust. Rutka perished in the gas chambers and left this notebook with a friend who only revealed it in 2006. This copy is the first US edition of the diary with annotations and photographs provided by TIME magazine.
