Description: A fine early abstract soft ground etching from American expatriate artist Charles Boggs (1921-2010). Boggs was an American School of Paris artist, after service in WWII he settled in France at the age of 29 and remained there for the rest of his life. This 1962 print is titled "Sous le Mer" and it is noted as an artist's proof . Quite large for an etching, the image measures 15 3/4 x 20 1/4 inches, sheet size is approx. 19 3/4 x 25 3/4 inches. It is printed on watermarked Arches wove paper with deckel edges and is hand signed, dated, and titled in pencil by the artist. Aside from minor handling grime and some spotting to the reverse, it is in excellent condition and it does not appear to have ever been framed or matted. Biography of Charles Boggs (courtesy of Gallery Michelle Champetier - Cannes, France) American artist born in 1921, he became a museum director. Charles Boggs moved to Paris in the early 1950s. He decided, upon his arrival in France, to devote himself to painting. Not only did he paint, but he also produced a graphic work. As soon as he arrived in Europe, he traveled to Italy with the abstract expressionist painter Stephen Pace (Orvieto, Rome, Naples, etc.), his friend. In Paris, he met and naturally became friends with many painters of the School of Paris, which was the great period of his career. A passionate and prolix artist, his first notebooks of abstract drawings allowed his friends, notably Edgard Pillet, to detect his personality as an exuberant inventor and colorist. He was a friend of the African-American painter Beauford Delaney who moved to Paris at about the same time as he did, in 1953. Charles (sometimes Charley) Boggs died in Cavaillon on October 26, 2010; he was 89 years old. *** There is an interesting biographical article about Boggs published online, "The Path from Kentucky to Paris: Charles Boggs the Artist" https://waller-yoblonsky.blogspot.com/2022/01/the-path-from-kentucky-to-paris-charles.html
