Description: It Was Written was an album that was full of interesting stories and/or tales about Nas's life in and outside of the confines of the Queensbridge Projects. Within this album there were stories about gun battles, stories about misguided Black men and women, and there was even a story about the life of a gun. The life of a gun you say? You must listen to track 4, I Gave You Power, to fully understand how brilliant Nas described what it feels like to be a murder weapon, er, gun. One of the best elements of this album were the guest stars, which included Foxy Brown, Mobb Deep, AZ, and Jojo of Jodeci fame. All of those guest stars blended well with Nas on some gritty and thought-provoking songs. Nas had to carry this album. Even though this album was well produced beat-wise and the guest starts carried their collective weight, Nas was charged with single verses on this album which numbered between one and two and a half pages alone. Plus, he had the pressure on this album of living up to Illmatic. In conclusion, Illmatic put Nas on the map, but It Was Written put him in the car that was headed for rap superstardom city. Illmatic was geared for East Coast hip-hop heads, but It Was Written took a step towards mass appeal (even though that wasn't Nas's intent, but it was Columbia Records' intent). And that statement rings true when you have the likes of Trackmasters spearheading much of your album's beats; Dr. Dre (track 7); Lauryn Hill (Track 14); Brown (tracks 5 and 8), and Jojo (track 10) on your album.
