His celebrated portraits capture the city’s queer pantheon of artists and drag performers, poets and writers, celebrities and deadbeats, strangers and lovers, acquaintances and friends. From East Village icons Greer Lankton, Ethyl Eichelberger to Susan Sontag, Fran Lebowitz, from Warhol superstars, legendary artists and his lovers Paul Thek and David Wojnarowicz. Hujar (b 1934-1987) has been the subject of retrospectives at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Fotomuseum in Winterthur, Switzerland. In 2005–2006 PS1 exhibited an important survey of Hujar’s work, and in 2007 the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London mounted a substantial exhibition. In January 2017, a major touring retrospective opened at Barcelona’s Fundación MAPFRE, accompanied by an expansive catalogue. The exhibition traveled to Fotomuseum The Hague, The Morgan Library & Museum, Berkeley Art Museum, and the Wexner Center for the Arts. Portraits of the cultural vanguard of 1970s and ’80s. Elton John (b 1947) in 1992 founded the Elton John AIDS Foundation, and since he has avidly collected photography.
