The purpose of the stamps was to commemorate Philately, the collection and study of postage stamps and postal history, on the 100th anniversary of the creation of both the American and Swedish Philatelic Societies, as well as the Smithsonian Institution's first acceptance of philatelic items. The commemorative stamp set was issued on May 22, 1986, in Chicago, Illinois, and has first day of issue cancellations. Included with the set are the three cardboard sheets with the canceled stamps; and a shiny cardboard folder/sleeve to hold the sheets.
