Description: Postcard, 6 x 4 in. Haymarket, Chicago, May 4, 1886. Celebrate People's History. Caption on back: "In response to the Chicago Police'skilling of 4 striking workers in 1886, labor leaders organized a meeting at Haymarket Square for May 4th. About 3,000 people assembled, later dwindling to a few hundred. A detachment of 180 policemen showed up, then a bomb exploded in their midst. The police fired in to the crowd, killing several people and wounding 200 others. Eight anarchists were arrested and put on trial. With an openly biased judge and a hostile jury, the Haymarket Affair is one of the most unjust trials in U.S. history. August Spies, Albert Parsons, George Engel, and Adloph Fischer were hanged. Louis Lingg killed himself before the state could. Samuel Fielden, Michael Schwab, and Oscar Neebe were sentenced to prison." Series: Celebrate People's History Poster Series, Postcard Set #2.
