Description: A rare, handsome set of decorative antique bookends of a scroll. Copper wash with green fronds on the tops and sides. Made by H. L. Judd Company around 1925. This set is listed in Kuritzky and De Costa's Collector's Encyclopedia of Bookends (2006) on p. 253 (plate 1742), where the authors title the set "Scroll." They give it a rarity value of 5 (rare) and value it at $225. Embossed at the bottom of the back side with the numeral 9831. Judd embossed its bookends with four-digit numerals beginning with 9. MATERIAL: Cast iron, because a magnet sticks to all parts. Two-part construction with a screw at the center of the back plate. CONDITION: The copper wash and green highlights are in nice condition. There is wear on the bases (see the last six photographs), light rubbing on the back sides, and a gold enamel paint (?) spot on the side of one bookend (see the next-to-last photograph), apparently the result of an errant brush during the manufacturing process. In the last photo, the wear on the base on the left side seems to be a few small touches of paint where the top of the base meets the front of the base, The marks below those paint dabs could be due to loss of the finish, but they do not appear to be rust on close inspection. I see no other areas that could be rust on either bookend. There are slight variations in color from one bookend to the other, either due to the painting of the bookends or due to differences in long-term exposure to light. For example, one bookend has a brighter red triangle at the center of the top section and brighter gold paint surrounding the apple-shaped area on the front (see second and third photographs). The colors are best viewed using the magnifier. The bookends sit stably and flush back-to-back. The felts on the bottoms are worn and possibly original. DIMENSIONS AND WEIGHT: Each bookend is 5.25" tall, 7.5" wide, and 3" deep at the base. The bookends as a set weigh a hefty 7 pounds and 14.4 ounces. The photographs are part of the description. Please examine them carefully, using the magnifier. SHIPPING: The bookends will be shipped bubble-wrapped in a USPS Priority Mail Medium Flat Rate Box, the cost of which is $18.40. Buyer will pay for shipping. EBay now collects state sales tax. I will accept returns only if I have described the bookends significantly incorrectly, but not otherwise, because of the shipping cost I would incur with a return. I do not ship to addresses outside the United States. Please see my seller feedback.
