Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE During the period leading up to the Civil War there was a growing anti-slavery movement in the U.S. and in England. This pitcher dating to that time reflects events in the book Uncle Tom’s Cabin written by Harriet Beecher Snow in 1852. One side of the pitcher shows Uncle Tom standing on an auction block being sold while his wife and child sit sobbing at his feet. The other side shows Eliza, Tom’s wife, and child escaping from the plantation master across the frozen Ohio River. The applied handle features a slave looking up with his hands folded in prayer. Around the base is a row of stylized tobacco plants. Measuring only 5 ½” high to the top of the slave’s head on the handle, this is the smallest of several yellow ware graduated sizes for this pitcher. The pitcher is in near mint condition with only small glaze loss on the inside of the rim near the spout with no other damage or repairs. This pitcher was made by the Ridgway Pottery Company for export to the U.S. This is a very rare and finely molded historic piece of yellow ware for the advanced collector.
