Description: Roman Republic | Issued by A. Caecilius | AE As Reference: RRC 174/1 Date: 169-158 BCE Obverse: Laureate head of Janus, I (denominational mark) above Reverse: A CAE ROMA; Prow of galley right Mint: Rome Size: 33.1 mm Weight: 31.82 mm This Republican as is has two intersting aspects about it. First, its very HEAVY. The second is the divot/pit/dimple on the obverse of the coin. Centration dimples are commonly found on Roman provincial coinage from the Principate and occasionally on the imperial coinage. However, I haven't come across anything similar on Republican coinage. The closest example I can find is a similarly dimpled debased late third century quadrigatus (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=51009.0). My best guess is that this could be evidence of a flan preparation technique that failed to become widespread. Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins.
