Description: UKIYO-E RELOADEDThe MAK Collection of Japanese Colored Woodblock Prints Urban pleasures and ordinary middle-class phenomena - not shown in classic Japanese painting - were the motifs of Ukiyo-e, "images of the flowing world." Created in the seventeenth century as the middle class began its development, this kind of art reached its peak in the influential color woodcuts by Katsushika Hokusai or Ando Hiroshige. The MAK in Vienna owns approximately 4200 Ukiyo-e works, which were created over a period of more than two centuries. This digital catalogue introduces a representative selection of about six hundred objects. The DVD makes it possible to study them on TV, and the CD-ROM offers additional interesting essays on the history of Ukiyo-e and the Viennese collection, a catalogue of key words that includes seven hundred terms in German, English, and Japanese; an image-based index of publishers' marks and artists' signatures, a glossary of Japanese terms, short biographies of all the artists, and much more.
