Description: Civil War issue. Standard pattern, The American Sword, Peterson #33. German import as used by both sides with 34 ¼” broad and narrow fullered blade, unmarked and surcharged with U S upon issue to cavalry troopers. Identical examples were sold to the Confederacy and remained unmarked. They were made by the known German manufacturers, but left unmarked to be marketable to both sides without revealing their source. Brass hilt with three bar guard and wire wrapped leather covered grip (dry but no damage). Blade complete with its leather blade seat, shows gray patina and frosty surface oxidation. These German examples were purchased by the US Government and imported early in the war and so saw more action than US made swords dated 1864 which postdated most significant battles and 1865, which may not have been issued at all.
