VERVE The Last Works of Henri Matisse 1950-1954 w/ Jacket & ALL 40 Lithographs

Description: This is a rare and valuable original first edition of The Last Works of Henri Matisse 1950-1954, a hardcover book of 40 color lithographs from Verve no. 35/36 (Summer 1958), some double, triple, and quadruple-paged, along with heliogravures of related drawings plus text by Pierre Reverdy and Georges Duthuit. Published by Harcourt, Brace and Company, New York, 1958, with lithographs printed by Mourlot Frees and heliogravure in black and white by Draeger Frees. There are 40 color lithographs in total, with 27 single page lithographs, 8 double page lithographs, 3 quadruple page fold out lithographs, and 2 triple page fold out. ALL ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPHS AND DUST JACKET ARE ACCOUNTED FOR. This book comes with its original dust jacket (preserved under removable plastic protective wrap) designed by Matisse specially for this volume. CONDITION: Interior pages are in good condition with some toning to most edges consistent with age. Color plates in overall good condition with consistent toning to most edges and the following wear (see circled areas in photos): Tritesse Du Roe has a small dark fingerprint in the outer frame, La Perruche et La Sirene has small evidence of folding at the corner edge, 2 of the Nus Bleus have minor dampstaining at the corners, La Piscine 1 has a very small tear, La Piscine 2 has a small fold at the upper left hand corner, Souvenir D'Oceanie has scuff marks outside of the artwork, Baigneuse Dans Les Roseau has one small foxing mark (not pictured), Coquelicots has three small stains. Most of these markings do not effect the artwork but since this is a valuable item, I wanted to be thorough. This item is vintage and in previously owned condition, not new or mint. • Hardcover is ripped at the spine (functionality and integrity not effected) and has abrasions at the upper edges, possibly from shelf wear. • Dust jacket shows wear and chipping around the edges with some tears, as well as a larger piece missing at the bottom spine (see photos).
