The Cuban Poster Gallery appreciates your business! Our price for this original woodblock print is $249 Own a piece of Latin American Cold War-era history! We are delighted to offer Vintage Cuban Revolution Print 20, which is part of a portfolio of 40 original woodcut prints that was displayed at a 1961 exhibition at the National Museum of Fine Arts of Havana (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana). The woodcuts in this portfolio were created by Cuba's Consejo Nacional de Cultura (National Culture Council) to illustrate the main points of Fidel Castro's fiery September 2, 1960 "Declaration of Havana" speech that served as a manifesto of the new revolution. In his speech before a huge crowd in Havana's main square, the Cuban leader harshly denounced the United States and praised Cuba's new allies: the Soviet Union and People's Republic of China. Castro left no doubt in his speech that, in spite of earlier denials, he was transforming Cuba into a one-party, communist state, which it remains today. The original woodcut in this listing was designed by Carlos M. Diaz Gamez (born 1926), an award-winning Cuban graphic artist and cartoonist whose work was widely exhibited and who once taught art to workers at a night vocational school in Central Havana. This hard-to-find graphic, which measures 14 by 19 inches (35 x 48 cm), echoes Fidel Castro’s 1960 speech in which he condemned the Monroe Doctrine as a United States vehicle to exert economic control over Latin American nations—from factories to railroads to waterways. The Monroe Doctrine was the 1823 declaration by U.S. President James Monroe that proclaimed the United States the protector of the Western Hemisphere, forbidding European powers from establishing new colonies in the Americas. This striking graphic also displays two of the most famous slogans of the Cuban revolution: Venceremos (We Shall Overcome) and Patria o Muerte (Homeland or Death). We have titled this graphic Vintage Cuban Revolution Print 20 because we have listed other graphics from this portfolio (assigning each a different number) in our eBay Store. We invite you to search on eBay for the other graphics with the key words Vintage Cuban Revolution Print. Each woodcut contains -- in the lower right border -- a brief, Spanish-language summary of the themes illustrated in the graphic. Copies of this vintage graphic can be found in major collections worldwide, including the Library of Congress's in Washington D.C. Overall condition of Vintage Cuban Revolution Print 20 is fair/good with some imperfections, including creases, tears and foxing ("age spots") on the borders. There are also six pieces of tape on the back of the graphic. Please see the multiple photos we have posted of this six-decades-old graphic. Buy with 100 percent confidence; graphics purchased on eBay from the Cuban Poster Gallery can be returned for any reason (in the same condition) within 30 days. Your Vintage Cuban Revolution Print 20 graphic will be shipped FREE to U.S. addresses by USPS Ground Advantage or UPS (with tracking). For international buyers (outside of the United States), eBay will calculate the cost of shipping and any required Customs duties and taxes. TITLE: Untitled.
