Description: This is a rare and very early example of a Patented non ratcheting compact 8 inch sweep bit brace. It is strong and very easy and convenient to use. The chuck opening is square and tapered so obviously is uses the square tapered auger bits that are plentiful on eBay. It has a spring loaded lever that will capture the bit if a notch is filed into the bottom of the shank. It will also work fine without using the spring lever feature. I don’t see a makers mark but it appears to be either a White or Taylor patent tool. The brace is all forged steel with the bow being 6 sided iron hex shaped. This brace was manufactured circa 1875 of so approximately 140 years old. It is in excellent condition and will last another long lifetime with proper storage.
