Description: This is just a fabulous, fabulous older set Japanese egg shell thin porcelain teapot with cups. Now you may notice that the cups are bigger than what you would normally see from a Japanese set and I do believe that is because this was made for the export market probably sometime in the late 40s early 50s. Each piece is signed. I can't read what it says. It's Japanese characters. This is kutani style and it's hand painted in red and gold and it's fabulous. The design is a running horse, which I understand is good luck also may symbolize success in war. It also might be that the Japanese knew Americans to be Cowboys and thought we were into horses, so that's why they made this for the export market. Also, what's interesting about this set is that each team cup has a good luck symbol painted on inside the bottom of the cup so when you finish your tea, you get a lovely inspiring message. In addition, the porcelain is what's called eggshell thin hold it to the light and you can see through it, look at my photos. I posted one holding the cup to the light. I have searched and searched the Internet and have not found another set with a horse on it… except for a set here on eBay selling for $438 and I think it's only 6 cups and nothing else. This set service for 10 there's 10 cups but there's 12 saucers there's a gorgeous teapot there's a creamer and a sugar bowl with a light lid. Sadly, the coffee pot doesn't have the lid and there's a tiny chip in the rim of the inside of the coffee pot. Other than that, I see no damage to these pieces they're just beautiful if you're looking for something unique and you got two extra saucers with it and I would think any white lid would fit on this coffee pot Here it is… Please view all the photos.
