Description: FEATURED IS A VINTAGE PAPERBACK COPY OF THE DIVINE WIND: JAPANESE SUICIDE SQUADRONS IN WW II ... THE STORY OF THE KAMIKAZE PILOTS; BY RIKIHEI INOGUCHI; TAKASHI NAKAJIMA; AND ROGER PINEAU. While the world knows the word Kamikaze and what it means in World War II parlance, it is not widely known that Japan's "Suicide Force" of fighter pilots only had a 10-month history. Officially called the Kamikaze Special Attack Force, the Force was formed in 1944 in an attempt to stave off an American victory. It was comprised of over 1,000 pilots and named after "the divine wind" that had saved Japan from a Mongol invasion centuries before. Its first victim was the US escort carrier, St. Lo, which was cruising east of Leyte when attacked ... and sunk ... by a Japanese pilot who purposefully crashed his plane into the ship in a suicide dive. An horrifying, but amazing true-life account. 1968 1st printing thus. A Ballantine War Book. (The true first edition was published in 1958 by the US Naval Institute Press.) 220 pages.
