The longer, smaller diameter side of the head is used for driving spikes over taller rails and in the narrow space between rails and highway crossing planks. The Grade B alloy version of the traditional Bell Pattern Spike Maul weighs 10 lbs. Meets the requirements of the current AREMA Plan #3.
